The Flint Street Nativity by Tim Firth
Heckington Players 2019 Spring Show.
The Flint Street Nativity was originally a TV comedy produced for Yorkshire Television and aired during Christmas 1999. Tim Firth rewrote the play and added music for the stage production at the Liverpool Playhouse in 2006.
The play focuses on the seven- and eight-year-old pupils in that evening’s sole performance of the school nativity play, from the pre-performance classroom preparations to the final stage performance, which culminates in calamity.
Mizzis Horrocks’ class is about to perform their nativity play at Flint Street Junior School for the proud mums and dads – and the occasional social worker. Squabbles arise when Gabriel wants to play Mary, the Star grumbles he’s not a proper star like they have at NASA, Herod won’t stop waving to his mum and dad and the subversive Innkeeper is determined to liven up the traditional script. And then the stick insect escapes…
There are inevitable mishaps, misunderstandings, young egos, fears of failure and fallings out. The children’s characters eventually evolve into mirror images of their parents when the actors all appear as their parents (the play’s audience) at the post- show gathering.
This is a ‘play with music’, but the music is in the form of traditional carols with new lyrics and the quality of singing required is that of any child at a Nativity Play! There will be no singing auditions but everyone who auditions should be happy to get stuck in with the odd carol.
